Use Competitive Intelligence to Get the Upper Hand
A business cannot survive or be successful without knowing
what is going on in the marketplace. No matter how financially
secure, innovative, and/or progressive a company is, it must
take note of what its competitors are doing. If not, the business
will trap itself into a box while the rest of the businesses
in that industry progress. Competitive intelligence is the
study and observation of the efforts of a company’s
competitors. Competitive intelligence involves management
understanding what the competition is doing to improve or
weaken its business. Management must then determine how the
competitions efforts affect its company.
Competitive intelligence sounds like a covert operation like
the Central Intelligence Agency. However, it is nothing of
the sort. A company does not send a spy into a competitor’s
building to deceptively discover what its next marketing plan
or its next big merger. Competitive intelligence is researching
a competitor’s past endeavors and trying to predict
what it will do in the future. Several companies specialize
in competitive intelligence. These companies perform primary
and secondary research on an industry and provide that information
to a business in that industry for a fee. This research includes
data about various competitors, their clients, suppliers,
distributors, and more. In addition to this, competitive intelligence
companies offer consulting services to help businesses analyze
this data and make wise business decisions. One useful service
includes creative competitive simulations. These simulations
use graphs, charts, and other visuals to predict the competition’s
next move.
In general, competitive intelligence provides an in-depth
understanding of the competitive environment surrounding a
business. It gives businesses a way to monitor the competition
and identify any potential opportunities or threats. Businesses
use this information to improve marketing strategies, efficiency,
products/services, and ultimately the bottom line. Companies
use the information gained from competitive intelligence to
understand when it is time to think outside the box. Competitive
intelligence gives even the largest and most successful company
a needed wake-up call when it needs to improve its performance.
